We did almost ALL the building!!
We considered all alternatives except buying an existing log home. We knew we wanted to customize every aspect to fit OUR lives, and did not think we would find that in the few homes for sale on the market in our area....
As self-builders, we considered: our skills (Habitat for Humanity building gave us a good realistic view of many details) and our tool set (there were many we had, a couple we could borrow, and quite a few, including a used Bobcat skidloader, that we invested in).
Do we think we made the right choice? Yes!! Interestingly, it was actually harder to get sub-contractors (as in "be your own contractor") than it was for us to do it ourselves. Ultimately, we had an EXCELLENT mason vs. several no-show plumbers (we ended up doing all plumbing ourselves).
